Frisee Lettuce
Frisee, also known as frisée, is a type of endive that has curly, loose, frizzly leaves. The center of the leaf is creamy yellow and is surrounded by bitter green outer leaves. The inner yellow heart of frisee lettuce is often used for salads and recipe preparations. Frisee lettuce is often referred to as lettuce, but botanically, it does not belong to the same genus or family as the traditional lettuce that many of us are familiar with. It is also sometimes called “curly endive,” “curly leaf endive” or “curly chicory”.
Because of its texture and bitter taste, frisee lettuce salad is often added to salads to make them more complex and contrasty. Frisee lettuce salad pairs well with other green vegetables, fruits, nuts and cheeses to balance out flavors and create a balanced meal. Frisee lettuce salad is also used in a variety of culinary dishes outside of salads, such as in sauteed salads or in soups.
It is a vegetable that is rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, K and folate.
